Steven Matz continues to deal down the stretch. Over his last five starts, he’s posting a 2.87 ERA which includes allowing six earned runs over six innings to the Yankees. That means his other four starts combined to allow just four earned runs. He’s coming off a stellar eight strikeout performance over 7.1 innings until he finally allowed his first hit in the 8th inning. His 9.77 K/9 in the last thirty days is third best on this slate and should benefit from facing San Francisco tonight. We talked yesterday about the struggles facing the Giants offense right now and it’s no different today. They rank dead last in wOBA in the last thirty days and Matz should get a big boost pitching at AT&T Park.

I don’t love the matchup, but it’s getting hard to ignore Rick Porcello at this point. He’s a whopping 16-3 this season thanks to pitching great for one of the best offenses in the league. Porcello hasn’t needed much help in the last two months, sporting a 2.25 ERA and .187 opponents batting average over his last seven starts. The strikeout numbers are a little lower than we’d prefer, but he won’t kill you with mistakes. Porcello has only walked five batters in this 52 inning stretch. While this game is against the tough Tigers offense, Porcello should benefit from this game being played in Detroit as opposed to Boston.

A roller-coaster season for Adam Wainwright has taken a turn for the worse. It’s been a tale of three seasons for Wainwright who struggled out of the gate with a 5.71 ERA over his first 11 starts. It looked like he found some good vibes in June and pitched to a 2.30 ERA over his next eight starts. Unfortunately, he’s lost his touch recently, back with a 7.36 ERA over his last five starts. That most recent stretch has his opponents hitting a whopping .355 batting average against him. His struggles make the Phillies a compelling GPP option. The Phils rank 12th in offense in the last week.
