David Phelps is worth pointing out for tonight. He’s a reliever by trade but thanks to injuries, he has been forced into the starting rotation for Miami. He’s made two starts, stretching it out to 70 then 91 pitches. He posted 9.1 innings and allowed a single run in those starts. Phelps has been effective in most roles this season and has a stellar 1.08 ERA over his last 16.2 IP. The Marlins should continue to stretch out Phelps (the same way the Royals did with Danny Duffy), so it’s possible he reaches pitches tonight. He will face a Reds team that has been very volatile this season, struggling to score runs for the majority of the year.

Is Ryan Vogelsong a thing? He’s made two starts since his stint on the Disabled List and has allowed just one run over those 12 innings pitched. That’s a 0.75 ERA and he’s tacked on 11 strikeouts in the process. He’s another guy who has bounced back and forth out of the bullpen this season, but could be settling back into the role that he was accustom to as a member of the San Francisco Giants. Vogelsong will face those Giants tonight in one of the most pitcher friendly parks in the league. Combine that with the Giants ranking 25th in wOBA in the last thirty days and it could be a recipe for success tonight for Vogey.
It’s always tough to handicap knuckleballer, R.A. Dickey. His style of pitching is volatile at best, so the range of outcomes is massive. However, it’s clear that something is not working for Dickey right now who has been shelled in his last five starts. He’s allowed 22 ER in his last 26 IP (7.62 ERA) while walking nearly four and a half batters per nine innings. He’s going to have to head to the small confines of Yankee Stadium and face a rejuvenated New York lineup that just injected a ton of youth into their lineup. The Yankees are a GPP stack at best, but offer the upside we are looking for.
