Consider Lance McCullers as an outside of the box option today. McCullers has been dealing since June, posting a 2.78 ERA over his last five starts. McCullers hasn’t allowed a homer since May 26th (six starts). He’s piling on the strikeouts, notching 10.3 K/9 over the last month. That figure ranks him third on this slate behind only Max Scherzer and Robbie Ray. Now he will have the opportunity to face the Oakland Athletics who are ranking 27th in wOBA in the last 30 days.

Carlos Martinez has turned his season around after posting a 4.25 ERA over his first nine starts. In the seven starts since, Martinez is dicing his opponents to the tune of a 1.46 ERA. His 1.27 ERA in the last 30 days is tops on this slate. Martinez has been a workhorse for the Cards, lasting at least six innings in every game during this stretch. The knock against Martinez is that he hasn’t racked up many strikeouts, but he will be facing the Brewers today, who ate striking out at a 25.3% rate this month which is the worst number in the league. Milwaukee continues to struggle at the dish, ranking 22nd in wOBA in the last 30 days.
On the flip side of this game, Brewers pitcher Chase Anderson is an option to target today. Anderson has lasted a total of 15.2 innings in his last four starts. In that span, he’s allowed 19 ER which would give him a 10.91 ERA. Opponents are hitting .348 against him and have earned a ridiculous 1.095 OPS. Now he will be tasked with facing the St. Louis Cardinals who rank 5th in wOBA this season and have scored the 4th most runs. This game will be played at Miller Park which ranks 5th in homers allowed this season and first last season.
