On a very thin slate of pitching, I’ll point out a few under-the-radar options. That includes Clayton Richard of the Padres. Richard has been excellent since returning to a starters role in San Diego. In his last four starts, he’s allowed just three earned runs which is good for a 1.17 ERA. He will take on the Rockies who have become an average offense since the injury to Trevor Story and Colorado ranks 23rd in wOBA away from Coors Field. They will have to travel to a tough park today at Petco.

It’s worth noting, that after nearly two years, Alex Cobb has made his return from Tommy John surgery. Remember that this is a guy who has posted a 2.82 ERA over his last 49 starts over 2013 and 2014. In that stretch, he proved to be a nice source of strikeouts, which he proved again last week against the Blue Jay. Cobb rung up seven Jays in just five innings of work. Today he will take on the Yankees, with the only real concern being his pitch count. It’s yet to be seen how many pitches the Rays will allow Cobb to throw. After firing 84 in his last start, I’d expect him to creep closer to 90 today.

The struggles for Taijuan Walker are very real.  He’s allowed a whopping 23 earned runs over his last 21.2 IP which is five straight starts. The run totals he’s allowed are 5, 6, 3, 4, and 5 in those games which shows he’s been equally bad in nearly every outing. He’s in for a big challenge today against Texas who currently ranks third in wOBA in the last thirty days.
