There’s plenty of high strikeout pitchers on this slate, but few are in compelling matchups. That makes John Lackey an interesting option tonight. Lackey has been great for the Cubs this season and is sporting a 2.80 ERA over his last ten starts. He’s piled on 67 strikeouts in those 64.1 IP and has surrendered three or less runs in all but one of those starts. Lackey has been even better at home this season, where today’s game will be played, as he has earned a 2.01 ERA in his seven home starts. He’s going to battle the Reds today who rank dead last (by far) in wOBA in the last thirty days.

Of the top-tier options, Carlos Carrasco always gets overlooked. He’s only made ten starts this season (missing all of May), but has pitched to a 2.16 ERA in his last nine starts. He’s been even better in the last month, where has tacked on 35 strikeouts in 29.2 IP and has earned a 1.52 ERA. He’s coming off a dominating 14 strikeout performance against the Blue Jays. I don’t love the matchup with the Tigers, but Carrasco has proven to be matchup-proof so far this season. Carrasco faced the Tigers on June 25th, throwing a complete game shutout with seven strikeouts.

The Orioles keep getting all the media love for hitting homers, but it’s the Blue Jays who lead the league in HRs in the last thirty days. The Jays also lead in runs scored and wOBA. Tonight, they’ll face the Royals and Chris Young who has the second worst xFIP on the slate. He’s walking 6.75 BB/9 in his last 30 days and is capable of a blow-up in any outing. He’s now surrendered nine HRs in his last five starts.
