How can I not write about David Phelps? It would be an injustice to you to skip him here. Even with his worst outing since becoming a starter, three earned over 3.2 innings, he still owns a 2.22 ERA in his five games in this role. The Marlins have clearly stretched him out, allowing him to throw 90+ pitchers in three of his last four. The most impressive thing about Phelps is his strikeout rate. He’s K’ing 32 batters in just 24.1 innings. His K/9 in the last 30 days is the highest on the slate. Now he faces the Mets who have floundered down in the bottom of the league in most offensive categories all season long.

Another flavor of the month is Robbie Ray who owns a 1.50 ERA over his last four starts. That’s only four runs over 24 innings. Another big strikeout option with 29 Ks in those innings. Ray will see a big ballpark boost leaving Phoenix and heading to San Francisco. The Giants offensive struggles are well-documented this season and Ray will look to continue his great run.
There’s lots of things to hate about Ross Detwiler today, so let’s count the ways. Since being traded to the Athletics he has posted a 5.73 ERA in four starts. Opponents are hitting .315 and he’s only striking out 13 batters in 22 innings. That includes a stellar game he had in his first game, so if you look at his last three, it gets even worse. Detwiler has allowed 14 earned in 14 innings (9.00 ERA) and opponents are hitting a whopping .365 against him! He gets the biggest ballpark downgrade of the day going from Oakland to Houston.
