NOTE: Darvish has been scratched today. This is not a slate that is particularly full of strikeout pitchers. Only three pitchers have 10+ K/9 on this slate and two of those pitchers have only thrown 15 innings. One of them, Yu Darvish, is particularly interesting. We’ve talked before about about the Rangers being very careful with Darvish this season, but it’s just a matter of time before he threatens 100 pitches again. Despite only 15.2 IP this season, he’s struck out 19 batters and has a solid 2.87 ERA. He has a date with the woeful Athletics tonight, who rank 26th in wOBA this season and 27th at home.

It’s possible to get a real nice price on Kyle Hendricks tonight. He’s going to have to battle Max Scherzer, but Hendricks has been divine for the Cubs this season. His 2.90 ERA is stellar, but it’s even better in the last 30 days. Over his last four starts, Hendricks has allowed just six ER over 27.1 IP, which is good for a 1.98 ERA. Hendricks will take on the Nationals tonight who he has faced once this season, lasting six innings allowing zero runs and only two hits.

I’ll be targeting the Tigers again today as they take on newly-acquired James Shields. Shields has always been a victim of the longball including giving up five dingers in his last 4.2 IP. That span includes 17 ERs and only three strikeouts. The last month for Shields has been really poor as he lays claim to a 10.90 ERA and batters are hitting a ridiculous .375 off of him. He’s in big trouble against the Tigers who own the third-best wOBA in the league in the last thirty days. The Tigers will receive a small boost from U.S. Cellular Field today.
