A very solid play in Jake Odorizzi tonight. Odorizzi is matchup-dependent but he faces a nice task with the San Francisco Giants tonight. San Fran ranks 28th in wOBA in the last thirty days and 28th in ISO, showing the lack of potency and power. Odorizzi has piled up the strikeouts in the last month, boasting a 10.16 K/9 in the last thirty days. That ranks him 5th on this full slate which includes 36 Ks over his last 28.2 IP. The Giants will get to add a DH tonight, but they have struggled so much that it may not be that large of a boost.

We have to keep talking about Gio Gonzalez who owns the second-best xFIP on this slate over the last thirty days (only deGrom is better). All of a sudden, he has been striking out everyone! He’s buried 40 batters via the strikeout in his last 29 IP. The problem is that he’s sporting a 7.45 ERA in that same timeframe, however his low xFIP would indicate that he’s been very unlucky. Look for him to find success against the Padres in San Diego. Petco Park is one of the most pitcher-friendly parks in the league and the Padres rank 28th in offense in their home park this season.

Let’s continue to pick on Phillies rookie Zach Eflin. Eflin made his first career start five days ago and was promptly slammed by the Toronto Blue Jays. In just 2.2 IP, Eflin surrendered nine hits, nine runs and three long balls. I am usually optimistic about a pitcher in his second career start, but his matchup today doesn’t get any easier. He will battle a potent offense in the Arizona Diamondbacks.
