Plenty of legit options on the pitching slate today including David Price, Max Scherzer and Drew Pomeranz. Let’s dig deeper into Pomeranz who is boasting a 10.66 K/9 which is fifth-best on this slate. The tall southpaw has dazzled this season, only five or less hits in 10 of 11 starts this season. He’s been deadly at home where he has only allowed two earned runs in 24.2 IP (0.73 ERA) while striking out 28. Tonight he draws the Braves who are the worst offense in the league both overall and versus LHP.

Having to decide between which ace to roster on this deep slate is going to prove difficult. I will lean toward Max Scherzer who has been having a weird, but dominating month. He’s currently sporting a 3.87 ERA this season and 3.05 in his last five starts, both of which are “un-Scherzer like”. Despite giving up a few runs here and there, he’s been an absolute strikeout machine, racking up 55 Ks in 38.1 IP in this most recent stretch. That includes games of 20, 10, and 11 in three of five. Now he will take on the White Sox, who started the season hot and have since trailed off. They rank 27th in wOBA in the last 30 days while striking out at the 11th highest rate.

It feels like a matter of time before Alfredo Simon loses his spot in the Reds rotation, but until then, we are going to target him heavily. The veteran has a 6.19 ERA over his last three starts. I purposely excluded his fourth most recent game, in which he surrendered 10 ER, to show how consistently bad he has been. His season ERA is now 8.94 and he’s allowed his opponents to bat a whopping .338 off of him. He’s in for a tough matchup with the Cardinals, who despite slowing down, still have the 8th best wOBA in the last 30 days. The Cards have faced Simon once this season but it was in a relief role. In that appearance, Simon lasted one inning before surrendering four runs and two HRs while only facing seven batters.
