MLB Preview, Monday July 3rd – DraftKings & Fanduel

Pitchers:

Today is a pretty short slate, so I’ll keep it short. At the top we have Marcus Stroman and Masahiro Tanaka, facing each other in New York. I prefer the Yankees starters, Tanaka, who has the higher strikeout upside in this match up. He is priced up, but considering the slate, $9,900 for Tanaka is fair. He has been pretty solid in his past 3 starts, with at least 18 points in 3 of his last 4 starts. For my SP2, I’m looking to Jharel Cotton. He faces the White Sox in Oakland. With pitching today, I’m just looking to not get blown up. Cotton has a good match up in a pitchers park. If you want to punt your second pitcher, you could do worse than Carlos Rodon and Andrew Moore.

Hitters:

Seattle Mariners

Boston Red Sox

Minnesota Twins

3B: Moustakas, Seager

Pitchers:

A full 15 game slate today, where the pitching options are interesting. At the top we have Jacob deGrom, at home facing the Philadelphia Phillies. He is the cash play, with a safe floor and a high ceiling. The Phillies do strikeout a lot, and deGrom has shown his ability to prevent runs recently. With at least 30 points in his last 3 starts, deGrom is the number one option today. Lance McCullers Jr. takes the ball vs. the Yankees, and he has a discounted price tag at $8,800. He gets to face a Yankees team without some of their starters. Matt Holiday, Starlin Castro, Aaron Hicks and Tyler Austin are all out. Lance has 8Ks in his last 4 starts, and he has already made his first start off the DL, so the leash should be back to normal. Another 8K option is Jacob Faria. He is legit good, and has a good match up. The Orioles are below average wRC+ vs. righties and strikeout above league average. If you want to get crazy Ariel Miranda faces the Angels, so he gets a great match up.

Hitters:

Detroit Tigers – Josh Tomlin faces a right handed heavy Tigers squad. Tomlin sucks to righties with a .377 wOBA. Everyone is in play.

Texas Rangers – Mike Pelfrey isn’t very good. The left handed bats in this Rangers lineup are Odor Gallo, Choo and Mazara. Andrus, Chirinos and Beltre are also in play.

LA Dodgers – Richard is tough on lefties, but the righties should feast in this match up. Bellinger and Seager are in play, but face a tough match up, until they get into the bullpen. Turner, Taylor, Grandal and Barnes all draw the platoon advantage.

C: Contreras, Ramos, Hedges

1B: Morrison, Encarnacion, Bour

2B: Ramirez, Happ, Lowrie

3B: Shaw, Seager, Sano

SS: Lindor, Crawford, Drew

OF: Harper, Dickerson, Granderson, Bonifacio, Yelich, Thames, Renfroe, Margot

Home run calls are Corey Dickerson and Miguel Cabrera

Pitchers:

Today’s slate might have the worst pitching options of the year. Strasburg leads these options, but in the heat, he struggles. The first pitcher that I have interest in is Masahiro Tanaka, facing an awful White Soxs team. He has gotten the strikeout pitch working the last 3 starts, racking up 27Ks. The White Sox have a right handed heavy lineup, so Tanaka has an even better chance of dealing today. We are going to get to pay up for bats today with my next 2 options. The safe option is Ivan Nova. You can almost guarantee 6IP, but he K upside is in question. He get a K heavy team in the Rays, but Nova himself pitches to contact. Luis Perdomo faces the Braves at home. Perdomo is a super ground ball heavy pitcher, who dominates at home. Both options are GPP only.

Hitters:

New York Yankees – Carlos Rodon is making his first start of the year today, and he gets thrown in the fire against the Yankees. He has been awful in his rehab starts, and struggles to find the strike zone. Judge Sanchez, Gregorius and Torreyes.

Houston Astros – They get to face Jesse Hahn at home. The last time he faced the Astros, he gave up 5 runs. Hahn doesn’t overpower batters, and when the fast guys get on, they will be able to run on any Oakland catchers.

Washington Nationals – John Lackey has been pretty good in a couple of soft match ups, but the Nats are not that. They stole 7 bases of Montero yesterday, and if they start him again the base paths will be wide open again. Lackey doesn’t hold on runners well. The big lefties in this lineup in Harper and Murphy are my favorite plays, with Turner and Zimmerman too.

Toronto Blue Jays – They just burned everyone, and are in a good spot again.

C: Sanchez, McCann, Herrmann

1B: Goldy, Bellinger, Votto, Myers

2B: Murphy, Merrifield, Pirela, Pedroia

3B: Turner, Donaldson, Harrison

SS: Turner, Mercer, Torreyes

OF: Everyone over 5K, Stanton Ozuna, Khris Davis, Chris Young, Margot, Trumbo, Spangenberg

Home run calls: Ozuna, Sanchez and Donaldson

Pitchers:

We have a full 15 game slate today, and we have some tough decisions to make at the pitcher spot. In cash games I’m going to be running out Max Scherzer and James Paxton. We all know Max Scherzer has the play play in cash, so don’t overthink it. He has scored at least 30 points in his last 6 starts. He faces the Cubs in Washington, and the Cubs carry more name value than actual production. James Paxton faces the Philleis in Seattle. He gets a big ballpark, and gets to face the Phillies who do strikeout a lot. Paxton has been roughed up a bit since returning from the DL, but this is a great spot to get back on track. A couple other options are Jeff Hoffman and Sean Newcomb. Jeff Hoffman has a great matchup, facing the Giants in San Francisco. He has been great away from Coors Field and is worth GPPs shares. Sean Newcomb  also has a solid matchup at the Padres. The ballpark is good and the match up is good. GPPs only.

Hitters:

Detriot Tigers – They get a weak lefty that is filling in the rotation for Danny Duffy. The Tigers will could throw 9 right handed bats vs. a lefty. I like the top of the order in Miggy, Upton, Kinsler, Martinez, Castellanos and McCann.

Toronto Blue Jays – The Jays take the Orioles in Toronto. Kevin Gausman is on the bumb and he is awful. Both sides of the plate, he is awful, and everyone is in play.

Miami Marlins – Gsellman sucks and the Mets catcher can’t throw base runners out. The power with Stanton, Bour, and Ozuna, could be too much for Gsellman. Dee Gordon can swipe bags and he will likely lead off.

C: Sanchez, Molina, Pina

1B: Bellinger, Votto, Thames, Adams

2B: Jose Ramirez, Cano, Taylor, DeJong

3B: Sano, Lamb, Shaw, Torreyes

SS: Andrus, Lindor, Simmons

OF: Judge, Haniger, Gamel, Pederson, Khris Davis, Altherr, Happ, Chris Young

Pitchers:

Chris Archer is my preferred play over Stephen Strasburg. Archer is a pitcher that has massive home/road splits, and we get him in the Trop vs. the Orioles. Archer has massive K potential vs. right handed bats, and benefits from a big ballpark. SP2 in cash games I think should be Alex Wood. The Rockies aren’t very dangerous on the road, and Wood has been excellent this season. Wood has scored no less then 17.32 points since late April. If you want to save some salary in the second pitcher spot, I’m looking  Luis Perdomo vs. the Tigers. We should see at least 7 righties in the lineup, so Lamet will hold the platoon advantage in most of the matchups. His slider has been filthy, with a swinging strike rate of 24%.

Hitters:

Arizona Diamondbacks – Super chalky, but this game could get out of hand. The top of the order is so much better than the bottom, but the price tags are up there. Keep it simple, Goldy, Peralta, Lamb, Owings and Drury/whoever leads off.

Milwaukee Brewers – Folty struggles against left handed bats, so fire up Thames Shaw and Sogard. It is a favorable ballpark to lefties, in Atlants, so hopefully Thames brakes out of his slump.

Houston Astros – They probably will go over looked in this spot facing Felix Hernandez coming off the DL, but they might be able to score a lot of runs. Springer might not play, so check back on this one. If Springer is out, I probably wouldn’t roll out the stack.

Texas Rangers – Tanaka has given up quite a few HRs this season. The Rangers have left handed mashers in their lineup, that are pure boom or bust plays. I may not stack this team if Springer plays, but if he doesn’t, this stack is in play in large field tournaments. I prefer the lefties, with Beltre and Napoli.

C: Posey McCan, Rupp

1B: Encarnacion, Bour, Smoak, Adams

2B: Taylor, Happ, Pinder

3B: Bryant, Turner, Seager

SS: Turner, Baez, Riddle

OF: Harper, Dickerson, Khris Davis, Yelich, Altherr, Kendrick, Mallex Smith, Heredia

My home run calls of the day (non Chase Field) are Travis Shaw and Rougned Odor
